TIMUCUA DISTRICT TRAINING SCHEDULE
A word about Scheduling.
It is the goal of any training
committee to schedule each of its courses such that it is easy for members of their
Council or District to receive the training they wish in a timely fashion. There are a number of
conflicting factors in producing a schedule. The factors listed below are some of the ones
training committees are trying to balance:
1. Each course is different. Some
can be done in one or more evenings, some in a day, but some involve many days, and
possibly camping situations.
2. Training events must compete
with other activities in the Scouting calendar and in the calendar of the community.
3. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
are each the Sabbath for a major religion represented in our community.
4. Training is generally more
effective, and certainly more fun, if there are at least a minimum number of students in
the course.
The schedule appearing in the
CALENDAR
is our effort at balancing these factors. Though we can not meet the needs of
everyone it is our intention to avoid having any one segment of our community bear all of
the compromises necessary in producing a schedule.

Trained
Leader Emblem
The Trained Leader emblem is available for all
leaders who have completed the Basic Leader Training program appropriate to
their positions. The emblem is worn on the left sleeve immediately below and
touching the emblem of office for which it was earned. Because trained leaders
ensure that the goals of Cub Scouting are met, every Scout leader is encouraged
to earn the Trained Leader Emblem for his or her current position.
The requirements to become a
TRAINED
leader are;
Fast Start, Youth Protection,
New Leader
Essentials, & Leader Specific.
"New Leader Essentials Training" is required for all new Scout Leaders;
Tigers, Cubs, Boy Scout, Varsity, and Venture. This is an approx. two hour formal course to acquaint
all leaders with BSA Policy,
Programs and Resources and should occur within two months of joining Scouting.
This training should be taken before attending any Scouting Program's "Leader
Specific" Training. Both the
"New Leader Essentials Training" and the "Leader Specific" are offered on
the same day.
All Leaders should get Trained within two
months of joining Scouting.
The entire BSA Training
Program, will address the needs of a leader as he or she joins, or moves
through, the different facets of the program. The training is aimed at
minimizing leader's investment of time in training, while maximizing a leader's
understanding of the program and developing his or her effectiveness in their
specific roles.
TRAINING
Why Attend or Train Scouters?
We are leaders and teachers, we
commit ourselves to delivering the "Promise of Scouting" to our Youth. To do
this we need to know:
| How do we make
Scouting FUN? |
What is Youth
Protection? How do we protect our youth and ourselves from abuse? |
| What is the Promise of
Scouting? |
What is a Safe Haven?
How do we create and maintain one? What are the Benefits? |
| What are the programs
offered? |
What are the Aims and
Methods of Scouting? |
| How do we develop an
effective youth run unit? |
What is a full program
that serves youth to age 18? To age 20? |
| What are the Scouting
skills? |
What is high
adventure? |
| What are the
leadership skills we teach and use? |
How do we effectively
manage our committees? |
| How do we teach
effectively? |
What resources are
available to us? |
| How do we learn? |
How do we develop
fellowship, build teams and solve problems? |
| How do the Scouts
learn? |
Why are some units
more successful than others? |
To learn or teach the answers from
this partial list is some of the reasons why we train. Training is a great bargain, as the
staff is made up of dedicated volunteers. Training and learning is also FUN and develops
friendships among staff and participants. Training (particularly Wood Badge training) is
also an opportunity to learn lifetime skills, which help us in our business, family and
personal lives.
Training is something we owe
ourselves, our youth and our units. Some of our units are in a catch-up mode to meet BSA
and our Council's training standards. Getting your Adults and Scouts trained can be done
easily, and your Council and District Training Teams are ready to help. The more we work
and learn together the better we can "Deliver the Promise" to our kids.

LEARNING FOR LIFE
Learning for Life (LFL) and
Explorer leadership Training
LFL's leadership training plan is
designed to provide all youth and adult leaders with a series of simple but effective
training opportunities that will meet the varying needs of LFL leaders. All sessions are
flexible so that the council training team can construct the best plan to meet local
conditions. The plan requires a minimum of equipment and materials and is scripted to
support those instructors with limited Scouting experience.
The continuing success of LFL
throughout America depends upon the program skills and enthusiasm of volunteer adult
leaders. It is hoped that this plan will provide them with the necessary knowledge and
inspiration.
Explorings
leadership training plan is designed to:
- Convey an understanding of how
Exploring achieves the purposes of the Boy Scouts of America
- Teach the best methods of program
planning and use of resources.
- Give insight into the skills of
leadership.

communication. idea sharing, and updating of techniques.
- Share information about local and

YOUTH
TRAINING
Boy Scout Youth leadership
Training
Youth leadership training is an
integral part of the Scouting program at the Boy Scout level.
Click
HERE to see the Youth Training Chart.
National Youth Leadership Training is an
exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth
members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home
troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.
For many years, junior leader training (JLT)
was an important part of the leadership training continuum of BSA local councils
throughout America. In 2003 and 2004, a task force of leadership experts and
hundreds of Scouts in pilot courses across the nation reviewed and tested every
aspect of the new NYLT syllabus, which incorporates the latest leadership ideas
and presents fresh, vital and meaningful training for today's Scouts.
The NYLT course centers around the concepts
of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key
elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive
during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
NYLT is a six-day course. Content is
delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate
application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work
processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids,
which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much
faster.
Built on the legacy of past JLT successes,
the new NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the
traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities,
presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT
participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give
them the skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities,
games, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into
action the best Scouting has to offer.
In addition there is
Youth Protection Training videos, specialized
training for Boy Scouts interested in serving as a
Den Chief in a Cub Scout Pack,

Venture Scout Youth leadership
Training
In
the Venture Program, Basic Training for Venture youth is accomplished using the
“Crew Officers Briefing” sections in the Venturing Leader Manual. An
Advisor or Skipper conducts this training to orient newly elected youth
officers to their roles and responsibilities.
Supplemental
training for Venture youth is accomplished using the Crew Officers Seminar
outline found in the New Crew Start-up Orientation manual. This training is
conducted by the Advisor or Skipper to orient newly elected youth officers,
plan programs, and develop the annual crew activity schedules. Other
supplemental training is available using the “Venture Leader Skills
Training” outline. This is a team building
workshop
conducted by the youth crew officers for both youth and adults members.
Additional training includes a
Youth Protection Training video, High Adventure Awareness Training
- "Youth Basic Backpacking Awareness
(YBBA), and special courses at
Philmont Training Center,
Florida Sea Base and the
Northern Tier Adventure Camp.
